Here’s what you need to know about insurance claims in Florida.

If you aren’t aware, home insurance in Florida has been crazy lately. Claims are being filed left and right, but why? Today I’m speaking with Paul from Schick Roofing to discuss what you need to know about the state of the insurance market.

In Florida, there was nearly $15.3 billion worth of insurance claims, so why are things so crazy? According to Paul, it all comes down to the attorneys and storm-chasing roofers. There are two types of roofers in our state: Restoration contractors chase storms and get people to file claims, while local retail experts believe homeowners insurance is for emergencies, not maintenance.

“Filing an unneeded insurance claim will cost you eventually.”

Restoration contractors essentially go door to door and ask people if they’d like a new roof. According to their pitch, you don’t even have to pay for it; your insurance will. However, when your insurance rates go up, you’ll see that you eventually have to pay.

Recently, the Florida legislature passed a law that allows for roof inspections. If a section of a roof is inspected and has more than 5 years of useful life left on it, the insurer may not refuse to issue or renew a homeowners policy solely because of the roof age.

What does this all mean for you? Paul recommends you get a warranty whenever you have your roof repaired or replaced. This way, you can be protected from storms without worrying about insurance claims. He also recommends you work with a local retail expert, not storm chasers. They’ll do quick and reliable repairs that you can trust.
